Good VR Doesn’t Always Have High Loyalty


It’s so nice to see people World of Warcraft avatars on their bodies at BlizzCon. That’s, like, sci-fi though.

It’s not! Seriously, you can do that.

You just need to keep track of the body. Let’s see … so the new iPhones have a U1 chip, direction. It has a very targeted direction, so know where you are. Basically, the two things you need are body tracking, which we have, and I also know who you are, which has to do with, perhaps, a handshake of the device. You can also use, like, a bracelet, any kind of electronic ID as well. Or if you really want to be boring, you can use the image market on a t-shirt.

Like a QR code?

Yes.

I think one of the most interesting directions AR can take is to open up people’s shared areas online. Like the avatars of people in video games, they are Fortnite skins.

One hundred percent. It will be interesting. I can’t name the names, but I tried a VR experience recently that required me to have a fairly realistic avatar. I wouldn’t do that if I had, like, Altspace or VR Chat. on VR Chat, I permi a stick of butter with small, skinny legs because they are so cute. But in Altspace, I have pink skin and white hair. Mura kog robot. [In that other experience] it makes me uncomfortable to look like a boring version of myself in clothes I wouldn’t wear in real life. I’ve never felt uncomfortable before with an avatar, and it makes me wonder how much people want to express themselves or in what ways, given the real options, you know?

The options are the thing. I play a lot of video games and I’m also impressed with the size that the systems want Roblox very immersive in people. I feel like we’ve learned so much about being immersive, what that means, over the last five years. The extent to which people care about graphical fidelity, about motion, the accuracy of motion. What kind of lessons do you feel you have learned or what kind of assumptions do you feel are widespread that could be broken?

Well, one of the things is that high loyalty is not as important. In fact, emotion is more important than visuals.

It’s like the debate between latency and resolution, yes?

Yes. But I think it goes a little further than that, too. Due to the fact that the headsets are so slow, there’s no way to look super photorealistic in VR, even if you want to. There is no way to bridge the last small gap. Even in the movies, we’re just about to get there. With that said, usually, when a VR experience tries to look ultra-realistic, I feel the most uncomfortable and oppressive of me. Like me, at least take off the roof, have a dolphin in the background or whatever. Why do I need to have a VR roof? It ends up being even more so when the mechanics of the world are fun. And I think that’s where Roblox is so interesting. Roblox has mechanics and then people make games on top of that. That’s why these changes are different depending on the game within Roblox. Minecraft is like that too. It has strict rules and people spend a million hours on Minecraft, literally. That’s as low fidelity as you can get. And though I would argue that it’s extremely immersive, too.
