5 Best Undershirts for the Cold (2021): Base Layer Tops, Wool, Synthetic, Blend

Your outerwear system starts next to the skin. Your undershirt (commonly known in the outdoor industry as a “base layer”) should be comfortable, not chafing, and wipe sweat off the outer layers of clothing so you don’t stay wet. Wetting can be just annoying, with discomfort from shaking and shaking, or really deadly if you’re in cold weather conditions.

Two things we look for in a base layer are how light it is and whether it has a hood or not. The latter is not necessary, but it is more convenient on sunny days. There are a lot of undershirts and base coats out there; some are terrible, but some really stand out, though. These are our favorites.
