7 Ways to Customize Focus Mode in iOS 15 for Work and Play

Do anything on a mobile device when there are 100-plus apps vying for your attention hard. It’s easy to get distracted, whether it’s because of work calls or random apps that constantly notify you. That doesn’t even take into account the casual game you keep on the home screen. To prevent this distraction problem, Focus mode in iOS 15 is Apple’s attempt to help people regain control of their devices.

“I like that I have a couple of options that can be locked in different ways. So for example, I have a focus on Recording that only allows text messages from my wife and Slack messages from our VP of sales who can go through me, ”he said. FM relay cofounder Myke Hurley. “I also have a work Out focus that blocks everything except the Activity app. I set up an automation in the Shortcuts app to trigger it every time I start a small set of workouts — so it doesn’t disappear when I walk, when there is a specific workout.

This iOS 15 Focus feature is an extension of Don’t Trouble. In the past, focusing on a specific task meant a blanket moratorium from past notices. Now, iOS devices can be configured with more granularity. This should make it even more beneficial for many people. However, Focus can be heavy at first glance, so let’s break it down.

Setting up Focus Mode

If you already have iOS 15 installed, the easiest way to get started with Focus is to go to the Settings app. Apple has some basic modes ready, including Do Not Disturb, Work, and Personal. Don’t Trouble blocks everything, but it can be changed. Work and Personal will suggest some people and apps to let notifications out, but I’ve found that these suggestions often revolve around new usage.

In the Focus section, there is a plus sign in the high right corner to add your own custom focus areas. Here, Apple has a few more suggestions like Driving, Playing, Exercising, Reading, and Thinking.

Once you select a target area, there are a few options to configure so that it can be fully set up. First, select the people who are allowed to send messages and call when the mode is active. Second, select apps that are allowed to intrude, if any. Apps can also be filtered based on whether they are time sensitive or not. Once the new Focus mode is set up, several settings are available.
