The FDA is OK with an Extra Covid Vaccine Dose for Immunired People

Today, the committee voted to approve a third dose for people with “moderate to severe compromised resistance.” that accompanying anyone who has received an organ transplant and is using anti-rejection medications; undergoing treatment for cancers of various organs, or varieties of leukemia; received stem-cell transplants or CAR-T cells as part of cancer treatment; have advanced (or untreated) HIV or a primary immune-deficit syndrome; or taking multiple doses of steroids, TNF blockers, or other drugs that suppress resistance.

At Friday’s meeting, officials estimated the change could affect 7 million people, 2.7 percent of U.S. adults affected by a severe lack of resistance. But the committee did not come to allow a potentially larger group to experience deteriorating resistance as a result of chronic diseases.

“Its purpose is to limit it to individuals considered under the EUA who are in moderate or severe” immunosuppression, Amanda Cohn of the CDC said during the meeting. “That doesn’t include long -term resident care facilities or people with diabetes, people with heart disease – those kinds of diseases aren’t always intended here in medicine.”

That’s not good for some members of the public who spoke during the public commentary. “I want to emphasize the importance of recommending a third dose for people in all immune -compromised categories,” said one woman who linked to the video session from Tennessee. “Please give us all uncompromising a chance to fight to protect ourselves.”

The evidence is already there establish for many months that Covid vaccines, which provide strong protection to healthy people, do not doing the work for those who have compromised resistance. After the FDA approved mRNA vaccines in December, a team from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine issued a social media invitation for people with resistance to sign up for their response to vaccination resistance can be documented. In the spring, the team published their first analysis: After their first dose, ra 17 percent of participants producing antibodies to a section of the virus spike protein; ra 54 percent showed an antibody response after the second dose. (In clinical trials by manufacturers, 100 percent of vaccine recipients developed antibody responses after their first dose.)

Another study, from Weill Cornell Medical Center, just found that 25 percent of kidney transplant recipients developed detectable antibodies. A team at the University of Pittsburgh warns about “almost nothing”Vaccine responses in leukemia patients. A project shared by Washington University School of Medicine and UC San Francisco has shown that antibody levels can vary in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases – such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis — according to what medication the resistance took.

To some patients and their doctors, it is clear that vaccines do not protect them. Despite being fully vaccinated, they went to Covid-not the few cases of rupture experienced by people with no resistance, but severe illness that required hospitalization. Data cited by the CDC on Friday shows that people without immune resistance are more susceptible to the virus and are more likely to infect their household contacts than healthy people; it accounts for up to 44 percent of vaccinated hospitalizations with successful infections. And a study published online last month in the journal moving On It is estimated that organ transplant patients who received two doses of vaccination were 82 times more likely to develop infections than healthy fully vaccinated people, and 485 times more likely than healthy vaccinated people can be hospitalized with Covid or die.

Online communities of patients are starting to share information about their increased risk, and some of those who aren’t sick are starting to hack into a drug: finding the third dose by finding sympathetic workers in health care, pretending to have lost their vaccination cards, or crossing state lines. the third shot will not be recorded in their state register in the country. (According to CDC data presented at Friday’s meeting, more than 1 million Americans may have received unauthorized sponsors.)
