Sleepio Overcome My Insomnia Where Quick-Fix Gadgets Fail

As long as as far back as I can remember, I had a hard time sleeping at night. Like many people, I struggle with intrusive thoughts and I find it hard to extinguish. Bedtime can evoke speech changes, worries about my kids, or my most hit by social mistakes and embarrassing gaffes. Early waking, hungry cats, birds tweeting, and a narrowing bladder were all my insomnia. Whatever the reason, burning the candle at both ends made me feel overwhelmed, concerned, and desperate.

That’s how I came to Sleepio, a six-week digital course that uses cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to overcome sleep problems, conducted by Colin Espie, professor of sleep medicine at the University of Oxford. The two worked together to develop Sleepio to bring evidence-based, mind-blowing approaches to behavioral behavior among the sleepless masses.

I’m happy to say it worked for me. For the first time in years, I always slept within seven hours of arrival.

Woe to Sleep

Too many people get less than that seven hours per night recommended for adults. Sleep disorders come in many forms, but more than one-third of U.S. adults suffer from rare insomnia symptoms, and one in 10 have a chronic condition, according to American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Treatment mostly fell into two camps; pharmacological or the aforementioned CBT.

“Some clinical trials have compared the two, and the results have been really impressive,” said Rebecca Robbins, a sleep scientist with the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. “We find that it’s also a good part of behavior if not better than medication treatment.”

Drugs have side effects and often mask the symptoms rather than fix the root of the problem. Anecdotally, the medication left me with a bad morning moan and did little for the quality of my writing. One of Espie’s conditions of consent that would help improve Sleepio was a placebo-controlled trial, like this, to test the effectiveness and safety of the software before release.
