Completing Starship One Million Autonomous Deliveries

Today I am proud to announce that we have reached one million autonomous deliveries, more than 6 years after the company was founded in 2014. We believe that no other company in the world has completed so many autonomous deliveries – including the ride of own taxi rides. We also raised an additional $ 17m and added services to two new campuses – UCLA and Bridgewater State University (Massachusetts) in the US. This new investment brings Starship’s total funding to $ 102m today.

We’re not sure where the 1st millionth delivery will take place, as there are about 15-20 service areas open around the world with robots delivering every minute. It finally happened in Bowling Green, Ohio, to a student named Annika Keeton who is a freshman studying pre-health Biology at BGSU. Annika is already part of Starship’s history!

Six years ago we couldn’t believe we would hit 1m delivery in January 2021 – we wanted to hit it right away! But it turns out that getting delivery robots to run a high degree of autonomy in many countries, 24/7, making thousands of deliveries every day and millions of miles every year difficult. It’s great that we have an amazingly talented Starship team where I’m thankful it turned out to be such a great event. It may have taken 6 years for us to hit the first million deliveries, but we expect the next million to last only a few months!

We also now launch UCLA, considered one of the leading public schools in the U.S., and we deliver from restaurants including Blaze Pizza, Bruin Buzz, Lu Valle, and Southern Lights. Bridgewater State University (Massachusetts) also now offers delivery from campus restaurants along with Starbucks Cafe and Bears Den.

The additional funding will come at a time when increasing interest in the autonomous delivery industry. Contactless transmission has proven to be one of the most reliable ways to protect vulnerable populations and enable social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are proud to provide non -contact food and grocery delivery at a challenging time for so many people. Demand has increased 5x in neighborhoods since the onset of the pandemic disease.

We have continued to see strong growth since the launch of our first commercial delivery service in 2018. Last year, Starship set several new records in the company’s interior delivery and expanded to multiple campuses. in college including Arizona State University (ASU), University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and UC Irvine. In addition to opening service in Mountain View, CA, we also began delivery in Modesto, CA with our new partner, The Save Mart Company.

If you are interested in solving difficult challenges and want to have a positive impact on local communities, as well as the environment, we’d love to hear from you as we hire for many roles today. We plan to grow the Starship team about 40-50% this year alone. Bring on 2021!
